    Champagne sales at the House of Lords reached their highest level in five years at £90,000.

    Champagne sales at the House of Lords rise to their highest level in five years Almost £90,000 worth of fizzy drink was sold last year.

    A total of 1,589 bottles were bought, worth £88,987.90, Freedom of Information data shows.

    The value is slightly higher than the previous year, when 1,580 bottles were sold worth £85,462.51.

    In 2020, when Covid-19 hit the UK, House of Lords champagne sales were just £8,982 sterling, while only 180 bottles were sold during the year, some of which were spent during quarantine.

    Champagne sales last year were higher than the day before: in 2019, 1,441 bottles were purchased for an amount of 69,988. £80.

    The Scottish National Party, which has no representatives in the House of Lords due to its opposition to the unelected second chamber, said the increasing amount spent on champagne showed the “lavish lifestyle” of peers.

    SNP MP Tommy Sheppard said: “Voters will be delighted to hear that while they have struggled to balance family finances and pay for basic goods such as food and energy, unelected Lords have been popping champagne.

    “The House of Lords is completely unclear. is archaic and out of touch – but it represents only a small part of the wider Westminster institution, which does not take into account the interests of the people of Scotland.

    “The House of Lords must be abolished, but we must also be free to find an alternative to Westminster in overall as we create an independent country with a Parliament that puts the people of Scotland first.”

    But a House of Lords spokesman said most of the champagne was sold in the gift shop or at events run by third parties.

    A spokesman said: “All alcohol, including champagne, sold at the House of Lords is sold at a profit.”

    “Most of the champagne sold at the House of Lords is purchased by visitors in the gift shop and is consumed outside Parliament by members of the public or sold at banquets to organizations or individuals holding an event in the House. Lords.
