MOSCOW, January 17 An old photograph from the 1930s, missing from the State Tretyakov Gallery, was found at an auction of the Graphic Collectors Club, reported the gallery press service.
«»The photograph from the 1930s shows a painting from the 18th century based on the famous work of Georg Groot, «Portrait of Elizaveta Petrovna on a Horse with a Little Little Black.» The only original photograph disappeared when the gallery worked as a library and issued prints at home. The photograph became one of the lots at the auction of the auction house of the Graphic Collectors Club, where it was noticed by employees of the Tretyakov Gallery,” the message says.
It is noted that the artifact was attributed based on the triangular blue stamp on the reverse side and the inscriptions of that time. The museum's photo archive also preserves a glass negative measuring 18×24 centimeters from the 1930s. The photograph was taken and printed at the same time by employees of the Tretyakov Gallery photo laboratory.
According to the inventory book entries, the author of the painting was an unknown serf artist. She came to the gallery from the Handicraft Museum to participate in the “Experimental Marxist Exhibition”, and was returned back in 1936.
“For many years, the department worked as a library, issuing “working prints” to employees and third-party researchers. The photographs had to be returned, but not everyone did this in a timely manner. This photograph came back to us in a rather unusual way. Having noticed it by chance at the auction of the “Collectors Club” graphics,» we were somewhat confused. What added to our anxiety was that we discovered this fact several hours before the start of the auction. In response to our request, the auction removed the lot from sale and offered to return it to the gallery’s fund,” said a senior researcher at the Tretyakov photo archive gallery Nikita Erofeev, whose words are quoted by the press service.
He, on behalf of the gallery’s photo archive team, expressed “sincere gratitude to the Graphic Collectors Club and its founder Sergei Podstanitsky for the return of photography.”
