Mazda has declassified the CX-70 crossover for the North American market, it turned out to be just a slightly redesigned CX-90 without a third row of seats. Meanwhile, the American automotive press was waiting for a more compact crossover under the CX-70 symbol.
The CX-70 crossover became the third Mazda model based on the Skyactiv Multi Solution Scalable Architecture platform with a longitudinal combustion engine and basic rear-wheel drive; previously it featured the mid-size two-row crossover CX-60, aimed mainly at Europe and Japan, and the large three-row crossover CX-90 for North America. The Mazda CX-90 debuted early last year with 2023 U.S. sales of 30,821 units. — a good result considering that production of this model began only in April. Now the Mazda CX-70 is entering the arena, its sales in the United States will begin next spring.

Today, the Mazda press service published only the first dose of photos of the CX-70 and said almost nothing about its technical content, but it is already clear that the CX-70 is made from the CX-90 model, that is, it most likely has the same dimensions (length — 5100 mm, width — 1994 mm, height — 1745 mm, wheelbase — 3119 mm), if there is a difference, it will be a few millimeters due to the slightly redesigned front end: the CX-70 is much wider than the CX- 90, side sections of the front bumper, and instead of chrome, gloss black trim is used.

The interior of the Mazda CX-70 from the driver’s seat is no different from the interior of the Mazda CX-90, in the second row in the available pictures there is a three-seater sofa (the Mazda CX-90 can have two separate seats in the second row), the trunk of the CX-70 is larger, than the CX-90, due to the missing third row of seats, there is a spacious storage organizer “for valuables” under the trunk floor. Mazda CX-70 trim levels have not yet been revealed.

For the Mazda CX-70, the same power plants are announced as those installed on the Mazda CX-90: a mild hybrid based on a 3.3-liter gasoline inline “turbo-six” and a plug-in hybrid based on a 2.5-liter gasoline “aspirated”, their Recoil has not yet been revealed, but it is almost certainly the same as that of the Mazda CX-90 powerplants. As soon as detailed technical specifications of the Mazda CX-70 become known, we will release a new note about this model.
The American media were very surprised that the Mazda CX-70 crossover turned out to be just a two-row version of the Mazda CX-90, and they cite for comparison the quite successful two-row Honda Passport crossover, which, in fact, is a two-row version of the three-row Honda Pilot crossover, but The Passport still has many more differences from the Pilot (both in size and design) than the differences between the Mazda CX-70 and the Mazda CX-90. In short, there is a strong feeling that Mazda has cheated a little — let's see how this circumstance will affect the commercial performance of the Mazda CX-70 and Mazda CX-90 and compare them in a year with the performance of the Honda Passport and Honda Pilot.
