“I was waiting for everything to end”: the tragic love story of Anastasia Zavorotnyuk

Anastasia Zavorotnyuk passed away after several years of struggle with a serious illness. All this time, next to the actress was her husband, figure skater and choreographer Pyotr Chernyshev. Sport tells the story of two people madly devoted to each other, and death will not separate them.

Figure skating is a very small little world where becoming one of your own without literally being one of your own – an athlete, coach or parent of an athlete – is practically impossible. Skaters speak their own language, have the unique ability to fly over frozen water and carefully protect their habitat from outsiders.

But there are still exceptions. This was Anastasia Zavorotnyuk, a popular actress of the 2000s, star of the TV series “My Fair Nanny.” She had no sports background, titles or medals when she became the host of the “Ice Age” project in 2008. Previously, only iconic figure skaters played this role – Evgeni Plushenko, Irina Slutskaya, Alexey Yagudin.

From that moment on, an ice age also began in the life of Zavorotnyuk herself – in the sense that ice became closer to her than ever. On the set, she met the eyes of figure skater Pyotr Chernyshev. It's hard to say which of the two disappeared first, but it was definitely love at first sight.

Both are beautiful, as if from a fairy tale about a prince and princess who are destined to become king and queen. Young, in love and inspired. We all love to read about stories like this, trying on ourselves with sudden happiness.

For both of them, this was not the first marriage, but it happens that it’s as if your whole life was needed just so that you could meet one day. Nastya and Peter had their wedding quickly and secretly – in defiance of those who cynically consider all the romances of stars to be a PR campaign. We got married in an ancient church in Crimea, inviting only those closest to the ceremony – Zavorotnyuk’s adult children from her first marriage.

The next 10 years of their life were that fairy tale about the king and queen. Peter and Anastasia were in great demand in the profession. They did a lot separately, but they also did a lot together – Nastya took part in ice shows and continued to host events. She even learned to skate quite well and do dance lifts – she and Peter had several numbers together. There is an expression “carry like a crystal vase” as a symbol of caring attitude. Chernyshev wore Zavorotnyuk not even as a vase, but as the most delicate and expensive flower with very fragile petals. Thanks to him, she literally floated above the ice, something that is not possible for athletes – they still have to put in a lot of effort. Even the best partner will not be able to carry his partner in his arms for five minutes.

Nastya gave her husband a gift – she chose and bought a house in the elite village of Krekshino. In addition to all other advantages, both were struck by the windows in the bedroom on the second floor, overlooking the forest. For several years they happily woke up there every morning and watched the color of the sky, the leaves of the trees and the voices of birds change.

Peter desperately wanted a child from the woman you love. At the age of 47, Nastya became pregnant, and in 2018 the family had a girl – they named her Mila. Is it possible to describe in words the happiness that filled them?

Zavorotnyuk in one of her television interviews described her feelings like this:

“It looks like happiness. It would seem that addiction should set in, or maybe irritation would appear. But no. I was waiting for this moment – now, now everything will pass, everything will end. It still passes. Many books have been written about this. But time went on, but the feeling remained the same. And I stopped waiting, fearing and simply accepted the state of affairs as a given.”

As suddenly as happiness, trouble came to them. Soon after the birth of her daughter, Nastya felt unwell. The situation worsened, and eventually a terrible diagnosis was made – glioblastoma of the brain. This is the most terrible and rapidly progressing tumor.

The long days and months of treatment and rehabilitation that have developed over the years dragged on. Nastya completely stopped appearing in public. Peter continued to work double-time, never ceasing to take care of his wife – searching for the best doctors, innovative treatment, any opportunity to alleviate her condition and prolong her life. He avoided communicating with journalists, as if he did not want someone else to interfere with their vulnerable harmony even with their simple curiosity.

Today, May 30, 2024, Anastasia Zavorotnyuk passed away. She was only 53 years old. She struggled with a terrible disease for almost 5 years and could not defeat it. But all this time the hand of her beloved man was in her hand, and the ringing voice of her growing daughter was heard in the house. Love is stronger than death.

expresses deep condolences to the family and friends of Anastasia Zavorotnyuk.
