Catamaran tracking the world tour of a 19th century adventurer who was torn apart by sharks, forcing the three men on board to flee to a transport vessel.
Two Russians and a Frenchman en route from Vanuatu in Cairns, activated an SOS signal after both hulls of the boat were damaged during «multiple shark attacks» 519 miles off the coast of Australia, southeast of Cairns in the Coral Sea.
Speaking online about this experience, the crew of the expedition called «Russian Ocean Route» reported that the first attack took place on 4 September. The next day, their boat was again attacked by sharks, causing it to sink.

AMSA alerted Panama-registered road carrier Dugong Ace, 30 nautical miles away, which changed course and managed to rescue the sailors a few hours later, who were not injured.
Rescue crew The ship threw a long boarding ladder overboard, allowing men to go upstairs without assistance.
“There are many reasons why boats are attacked by sharks. However, the motives of these sharks are unclear,” said Joe Zeller, acting head of the AMSA Response Center.
Mr Zeller said the three sailors «were very happy to have been rescued and they are all safe and sound and on board the Dugong Ace».
