Millions of football fans associate Frank Skinner and David Baddiel's 1996 Three Lions anthem with fond memories of haunting England against all odds.
But this song was rewritten by liberal democrat activists. as a pro-Brussels song with lyrics about rejoining the European Union for their annual karaoke night at the party conference.
MPs and MPs will gather on Monday for the infamous Glee Club event, which will end the final night of the meeting in Bournemouth with political parodies of popular songs.
The 32nd edition of the Liberator Songbook, priced at £5, includes «Golden Stars» (On My Flag), set to the tune of «Three Lions».
It begins with a reference to the «referendum» full of hate» followed by a chorus with the words: «Gold star on the flag, four freedoms, still shining, glory years of the world kept us all campaigning.»
The second verse of the rewritten version begins with the words: “So many voices, so many tears, everything was so close, and then we lost, it cost so much.”
Instead of the familiar «it's coming at home» chant on the terrace, activists express hope for Britain to reunite with the EU, singing: «We'll be back, we'll be back, we'll be back.»
The silliest lyrics from a liberal democracy 039;s Songbook Liberator
Sir Ed Davey, the Liberal Democrat leader, insists a return to the bloc is currently «off the table» but declined to comment on whether that is his party's long-term goal.
Gold Stars (on my flag) have been performed at previous conferences, including at the height of the Brexit impasse, when the Liberal Democrats promised to cancel Brexit without a second referendum.
The classic Beatles song Let It was also reworked with the title «Liz's Salad» to poke fun at Liz Truss, who outlived the vegetable after her short-lived premiership collapsed last October.
A live broadcast produced by a tabloid newspaper asked: «What wet salad will last?» longer?», with the leafy plant eventually outliving Ms Truss's government.
'Weak and shaky'
Other former prime ministers will also face the wrath of the Glee Club.
The Prosciutto case highlights sinister allegations about David Cameron's alleged participation in the Oxford University initiation ceremony, which he has always denied.
Theresa May, who succeeded Mr Cameron, has been described as 'weak' and shaky» in Guide Me, O Great Teresa, while many Lib Dem MPs are also ridiculed.
Tim Farron, former party leader and devout Christian, was criticized for his rewrite of It's a Sin by the Pet Shop Boys following a row in which he initially refused to say whether he thought being gay was sinful.
A page from the Liberal Democratic Party songbook
In 2015, Glee Club came under fire after its songbook included lyrics mocking its former leader Liberal Democrats Charles Kennedy, who drank alcohol just a few months ago. following his death from alcoholism.
This year's singing will be the first in four years after the party's annual autumn meeting was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid pandemic, and in 2022 after the death Elizabeth II.
A Lib Dem spokesman said: “The books on singing presented at the conference cover everything from salad to dogs and even Doctor Who.”
“We would never want to suppress the freedom of singing with the help of a drink in your hands.”
