MOSCOW, November 14 An experiment to isolate a crew of six to simulate a flight to the Moon lasting One year of SIRIUS-23 will begin on November 14 in Moscow, the Institute of Medical and Biological Problems (IMBP) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, on whose experimental installation the “flight” will take place, was previously reported.
As reported on the project website, the start of the year-long isolation will take place on November 14.
Variable composition
Earlier, IBMP Director Oleg Orlov announced and presented the composition of the SIRIUS-23 crew. This time, five Russians will go to the Moon: crew commander Yuri Chebotarev, flight engineer Anzhelika Parfyonova, doctor Ksenia Orlova, as well as researchers Ksenia Shishenina and Rustam Zaripov. Another researcher is the representative of Belarus Olga Mastitskaya.
Initially, the isolation experiment program was planned as a joint one with NASA, but in April 2023, Orlov announced that the Americans had suspended their participation in it. As reported in September, the crew of the year-long experiment included the Egyptian Mohammed Essam Sayed Abdelaal, but then he also dropped out of the project.
It is expected that participants from India, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Malaysia, the United States and Korea will participate in the experiments during the year-long study.
On the surface of the Moon
According to the experiment scenario, the crew will go into low-Earth orbit on a promising transport ship, and then for another four days they will “fly” to the Moon, where the ship “ will dock» with the lunar orbital station. In a month, a retrofitting transport ship should “arrive” at the participants of the experiment; the crew will have to work with it for two days without a break for sleep.
During the experiment, participants will have to “land” on the surface of the Moon five times. Four “cosmonauts” will take part in this activity. During such “landings” it is planned to assess how psychological compatibility will influence the effectiveness of work on the surface of the Earth’s natural satellite.
The crew will begin their return “flight” to Earth on the 362nd day of the mission. The “return” will take four days. It is also planned that during the period from the 38th to the 332nd day of the experiment, emergency situations will be simulated for its participants.
The international project SIRIUS (Scientific International Research In Unique Terrestrial Station) is carried out on the basis of IBMP and includes a series of isolation experiments to simulate space flights. Experiments have already been conducted for 17 days — in November 2017, four months — in 2018-2019, and eight months in 2021-2022. In addition to the Russian participants, the crews included Victor Vetter from Germany, Reinhold Povilaitis, Allen Mirkadyrov, Ashley Kowalski and William Brown from the USA, as well as test driver from the UAE Saleh Omar Al Ameri.
