YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, December 18. Specialists recorded a second ash emission on the Kuril volcano Ebeko on Thursday, reports the press service of the main department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia for the Sakhalin region.
«»A second ash release at Ebeko Volcano occurred on Thursday afternoon. The Sakhalin Volcanic Eruption Response Team reports that the height of the ash column, like the morning release, was up to three kilometers above sea level. The plume spread in a northeast direction at a distance of more than five kilometers,” the department said.
According to dispatchers, no ash fall was observed in Severo-Kurilsk, the smell of hydrogen sulfide was not felt, and there was no threat to the life of the population.
At the same time, a resident of Severo-Kurilsk said that after the eruption on Ebeko, the snow in the city darkened due to ash.
The Ebeko volcano, 1156 meters high, is located on the island of Paramushir — seven kilometers northwest of Severo-Kurilsk in the northern part of the Vernadsky ridge. Regular emissions (from weak to moderate) have been ongoing since October 20, 2016, which is normal activity for the volcano. The record emission was registered on August 31, 2018. Then a column of smoke rose to a height of six kilometers from a new volcanic crater formed in 2017.
