MOSCOW, March 13Russian scientists have developed a method for creating composite materials that, for example, are suitable for the production of bearings without lubrication, the Russian Science Foundation (RSF) reported.
Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is increasingly used in various composite (consisting of several components) materials. It is called the “polymer of the future” for its unique mechanical and functional properties: biocompatibility, low coefficient of dry friction, high wear resistance and chemical inertness.
Thanks to this set of properties, this polymer is used in medicine for the production of implants and endoprosthetic liners, in industry — for the creation of sliding bearings, lining of metallurgical ladles, as well as in many other areas. In addition, composites based on such a polymer make it possible to eliminate lubricants that pollute the environment.
Scientists from the capital’s Sechenov University and NUST MISIS, as part of a study supported by a grant from the Russian Science Foundation, have achieved more high-quality adhesion between layers of polymer and metal materials, treating the first with acids and “sewing” cellulose molecules to them. This approach, according to researchers, will make it possible to create composite materials for various products: from endoprostheses to elements of moving metal structures, such as automobile bearings.
