Ukraine retakes part of Bakhmut in biggest counter-offensive in months

Russian soldiers caught on camera fleeing fighting near Bakhmut

Video footage of a tank has surfaced showing a hasty retreat that led to armed forces are developing a strip of land about three kilometers wide and 2.6 km wide on the southwestern outskirts of Bakhmut.

“As a result of the offensive actions of the 3rd Specialized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, parts of the 72nd brigade of the Russian Federation were defeated,” — Andrey Biletsky, founder of the Azov Battalion, said.

    Russian units left their positions

“In fact, the 6th and 8th companies of this brigade were completely destroyed. The entire territory was completely liberated from the Russian occupying forces.”

His video statement would confirm an earlier statement by Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the Russian Wagner mercenaries who led Moscow’s efforts to capture Bakhmut, that Russian units had abandoned their positions in city.

Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine's president has repeatedly defied advice from his Western supporters, such as the United States, to withdraw from Bakhmut, which some allies do not consider strategically important.

Military analysts suggest that Bakhmut could be a potential target of Ukraine's long-awaited spring counteroffensive , given the significant losses that Russia suffered when trying to capture the city during a grueling nine-month battle, the longest and bloodiest of the entire war.

In a social media post, Ukraine's 3rd Assault Brigade said it had killed 64 Russian soldiers during the offensive, wounded 87 more, and captured five prisoners of war.

Drone footage shows their tank moving through the edge of the forest scaffolding, firing machine guns, while Russian soldiers turn and run for their lives.

Ukrainian soldiers, identified by their green tactical insignia, advance behind the combat vehicle, shooting those remaining in position.

< p>Colonel Biletsky said Kyiv forces also damaged a “significant number” of Russian IFVs, as well as ammunition depots and mortar positions in the attack.

    Disunity on the Russian frontline

Aerial footage shows the first of four Russian IFVs destroyed by Ukrainian artillery fire lined up in an open field along a tree line.

Video from the first A face filmed from a Ukrainian soldier's body camera showed the unit in a firefight with fleeing Moscow troops as they marched over the bodies of dead Russians.

The success of Ukrainian counterattacks in the Bakhmut area also revealed disunity on the Russian front line.

An unconfirmed account purporting to belong to Russian volunteer Anastasia Kashevarova wrote about the “complete disunity of the front”, claiming that Russian forces were not allowed to communicate with Wagner.

For more than a month, Ukraine has been clinging to the last few streets in southwest corner of Bakhmut, which Zelenskiy called a “fortress.”

Russian forces are trying to encircle the remaining Ukrainian positions from the north. and south, but suffered heavy losses.
