A geographer from Moscow State University created a “scientific” rating of Russian cities
The leading cities in terms of the number of scientists living there per 100 local residents were determined by Renat Timirgaleev, candidate of geographical sciences from Moscow State University.
The study was carried out by him using data from eLibrary.Ru — a scientific library that contains statistics on the number of authors for various cities and other categories of settlements.
Renat Timirgaleev, according to him, identified the top 25 settlements with a population of at least 10 thousand people. Let's list the top ten leaders.
In the first two positions, with a large gap from others (about 15-16 authors per 100 residents), were two science cities near Moscow — Chernogolovka and Pushchino. In Chernogolovka there is a whole cluster of physical institutes, such as the Institute of Solid State Physics, the Institute of Theoretical Physics named after. Landau and others. In Pushchino — Center for Biological Research, Pushchino Radio Astronomy Observatory and other scientific organizations.
Next with similar indicators (about 3.5-3.6 authors per 100 inhabitants) are Dubna near Moscow (primarily the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research) and Troitsk within Moscow (Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, Ionosphere and Radio Wave Propagation named after N.V. Pushkov , Institute of Spectroscopy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Troitsk Institute of Innovation and Thermonuclear Research and others).
In fifth place is Tomsk with its two large universities and the Tomsk Scientific Center SB RAS.
In sixth place is science city Koltsovo, near Novosibirsk. The Vector Center for Research in Virology and Biotechnology dominates here. The seventh position is occupied by the city of Apatity, located above the Arctic Circle, with its Kola Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Moscow took only eighth place in the ranking. In ninth position is Obninsk, the birthplace of the world’s nuclear energy with its Institute of Physics and Power Engineering, and in tenth position is the city of Zernograd, Rostov Region, with several specialized research institutes and scientific centers working in the field of agricultural sciences.
