Not life, but torture
Convict Takhirjon Bakiev was found dead in the Irkutsk colony. The official version is suicide. But the real reason for his death was torture (no matter what is written on the death certificate).
Two years ago he was brutally raped with a mop. Many weeks in intensive care, endless days and nights filled with physical and mental pain, two years with a colostomy bag. And for all two years Takhirjon begged for help, talking about the pressure that was being put on him behind bars in order for him to reconcile with his tormentors in uniform. He, recognized as a victim in a torture case, was not transferred to another region during the investigation of employees of the Federal Penitentiary Service in the Irkutsk Region. The court showed no mercy to him — mutilated, crippled — by refusing parole. But even despite everything, he was not going to die. He had only six months left before his release.
His death is also a verdict on three institutions of control over places of detention in the Irkutsk region — the supervising prosecutor's office, the Public Monitoring Committee and the Human Rights Commissioner. None of them helped Bakiyev.
“People, I am not a maniac, not a pedophile, not a terrorist, not a murderer. He did not offend children, old people and women. I'm not a villain to disfigure me like that and then drive me crazy. My spine is damaged, my intestines are torn, I have a colostomy bag on my stomach… I ask everyone who reads this letter to help me reach the President to ensure my safety and protect me from the constant pressure of the Irkutsk GUFSIN.»
This open letter from Bakiyev. Unfortunately, it did not reach the recipient.
Bakiyev died painfully in front of all those who are called upon to monitor the observance of the rule of law behind bars. They killed him, and they, it turns out, watched. What different meanings do these cognate words “observe” and “observe” have…
Bakiyev went to jail six years ago. He received a sentence for stealing weapons. He served his sentence in the Angarsk colony, where there was a riot. Then the convicts were taken out of there, some were tortured. According to my information, at least 300 people were injured. The wildest thing is that they were raped. In general, it is impossible to imagine that a FSIN employee can give an order to rape a prisoner. But that’s exactly how it was.
In connection with the torture of Bakiyev, two criminal cases were opened: one against the employees (the head of IK-6, Alexey Agapov, the deputy head of the operational department, Alexey Mednikov, and the department’s detective, Anton Erokhin, are accused of exceeding official authority with the use of violence and causing grave consequences), the second against prisoners. “developers” (six prisoners are accused of sexual assault).
Several jailers have already received sentences for torturing convicts in the Angarsk colony, but the majority are still under investigation and trial. They hope that they will not suffer the sad fate of their colleagues. What is needed for this? For the victims to retract their words. I recently wrote about how one of the victims of sadists did just that. He came to MK, spoke about the violence under the video, but when he was detained again and placed in a pre-trial detention center, he stated that he had slandered the “kind and honest” employees under pressure from human rights activists.
Takhirjon Bakiev before torture
But there were those who did not refuse and did not want to reconcile with the tormentors. Bakiyev is one of them. In general, two prisoners suffered the most from torture in Irkutsk in 2021. These are Kezhik Ondar, whose boiler exploded in his intestines, and Takhirjon Bakiyev, whose internal organs were torn apart with a mop. Both spent many days in intensive care. It would seem that after this, the state should have at least helped them with their release, because a monstrous crime occurred in a government institution. But no.
Kezhik's sentence has expired, he is free, he is lucky. Bakiyev's term was coming to an end (he was denied parole), he was unlucky.
And after
How did Bakiev live all this time behind bars? It's hard to even imagine. He didn’t want to communicate with his family — he was ashamed that he had been raped. Relatives convinced him that the jailers should be ashamed, not him. Then he complained for a long time that the colostomy bag was not changed, that high-quality medical care was not provided (the editorial office has copies of all appeals to the Investigative Directorate for the Irkutsk Region). He asked the investigation to investigate these facts. But it only got worse. Especially when he refused to reconcile with his tormentors.
“It was clear that he would get revenge,” says a witness in the case, M. “I am a former developer. That is, someone who, on instructions from employees, committed illegal actions against other prisoners. I’m not justifying myself, but I had no choice, which was confirmed by the investigation. But here's what happened. When I began to testify (already free), three unknown men attacked me and brutally beat me. It was a miracle that I survived. Came under state protection. And then it turned out that they were sent to beat me by a convict who took part in the torture of Bakiyev. He admitted that he did everything at the request of the employees, fearing that otherwise he would not live to see the trial.
How many more deaths will it take for torture in the FSIN to stop?
