The top versions of the models, which were previously called XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge, have increased the output of the twin-engine unit to 442 hp.
The Swedish brand Volvo is part of the Chinese holding Geely. The company has quietly carried out several updates to the junior all-electric crossovers XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge in recent years. Thus, the latter, during which the range values on a single charge were significantly adjusted, became known in the spring of 2023. Now Volvo did not become modest and talked about the next update of the “green” SUVs.

Some of the main updates were new names: the compact crossover XC40 Recharge was renamed Volvo EX40, and the coupe-shaped SUV C40 Recharge will now be sold under the name EC40. The manufacturer explained that these names are more consistent with other current models of the brand’s “green” family – EX30, EX90 and EM90 (available on the Chinese market). At the same time, it was decided to leave the name XC40 for modifications of the model with an internal combustion engine.

Model nameplates are not the only change on the refreshed Volvo EX40 and EC40. Thus, the top versions of crossovers with dual-engine units have increased their total output: with the help of the Performance package, the figure was increased by 34 hp. up to 442 hp The maximum torque, apparently, remains the same (670 Nm), as well as the useful battery capacity – 78 kWh. At the same time, the range on one charge of the models is now higher: for the EX40 the figure is 576 km (41 km more than the pre-reform version), for the EC40 – 583 km (35 km more).

Also on the list of updates is the appearance of a new special version of the Black Edition for the EX40, EC40 and XC40 models. These SUVs have a black Onyx body color, darkened glossy branding, and 20-inch black five-spoke alloy wheels. These versions are offered two interior trim options, as well as Google services integrated into multimedia.

Volvo now continues to pursue its own “greening” plan, according to which by 2030 the brand will develop and produce only electric vehicles. The company estimates that at the end of last year, electric vehicles accounted for 16% of Volvo's total global sales. At the same time, the figure increased by 70% compared to the result of 2022. Volvo expects it to increase by the end of 2024.

The Swedish brand has prepared changes for a couple of other models: we are talking about a modernized gasoline engine that operates as part of a mild hybrid powertrain installations in the B5 configuration of such crossovers as the XC60 and XC90. The result was a reduction in CO2 emissions and an increase in fuel efficiency by 4% for the Volvo XC60 and 2% for the XC90.
